The One with the Standin' on the Corner Race

I have participated in a lot of races, but I've never organized one.  Until now.

My sister Rissa and I were tired of driving to other cities for races, so she had the idea to start a race here in Winslow.  We took on the challenge and it consumed our every thought for the past two months.  But it was so worth it.  The race was a huge success!  Since Rissa already beat me to it, you can read it about it in further detail on her blog:

or on this blog from a race participant:

Can't wait to organize another race...and maybe we'll even get to run in the next one!

The One with 9/11

September 11, 2001

I was student teaching in 2nd grade at Bluford Guion Elementary School in Philadelphia when a teacher ran into our classroom and started yelling something about planes and buildings crashing down everywhere.  School was immediately cancelled and when I got home and saw the news I could not believe my eyes.  They were showing the Twin Towers collapsing over and over and over again.

It was a terrifying sight to see, especially since Steve and I had just visited the World Trade Center a few weeks before.  The view from the top of the Twin Towers was amazing, to say the least.  It was literally breathtaking at how high up we were.

I LOVE this picture of us from that day, even though I look like a major nerd, and my eyes are closed as usual.

Top of WTC-August 2001

I have visited NYC three times before 9/11, and once afterwards.  When we were there we had to go see for ourselves the site of the WTC.  The amount of destruction was unbelievable.  The pictures don't even come close to how bad it was.

It's bittersweet with the 10 year anniversary coming up.  I am excited to see the rebuilding and the memorial, yet sad for the memory of that day.

God bless America, my home sweet home.
